Online Module 4: Fascism

Hello! Welcome to another blog post. In this post, I will be discussing Fascism. We will be looking into the section regarding the topic of Chapter 20 of the World History book by Strayer. To help you better understand the concepts and ideas,

1) Summarize the section from chapter 20;

The Fascist Alternative in Europe: Fascism was known to be the most extreme manifestation of nationalism. The nation should come first and any ideology or practice that opposes or divides society is to be violently opposed. Meaning, there is only to be an arbitrary set of beliefs and laws to be strictly followed. Fascist movements praised violence as a cleansing force that would root out weakness from society and give men a chance to prove themselves. Parties usually used violence against their political opponents during the power struggle. There was a dire need to be in authority as the leader had the ultimate power over society. It can be associated with dictatorship.

2) Summarize what you learned during your self-guided research

Fascism is a form of far-right authoritarian and ultranationalist characterized by dictatorial power. Fascism is often associated with German Nazi and Italian regimes that came to power after World War I. A goal of the political ideology is to use the country's assets to increase the country's strength which often leads to the nationalization of assets. Fascist parties and movements are varied from one another but often have common characteristics which include; extreme militaristic nationalism, contempt for electoral democracy and political and cultural liberalism, a belief in a natural social hierarchy and the rule of the elites, and a desire to create a community for the people. From what I have read through my research, I can infer that fascist ideologies and way of leading oftentimes is associated with tyranny and abuse of power. Therefore, if we look into the countries that practice such ideologies, there is a falter in development.

3) Relate what you’ve learned from both of those activities to the world we live in today. Some people say that fascist tendencies seem to be on the rise in parts of the world today… do you agree? If so, in what ways do contemporary trends demonstrate fascist tendencies? If not, what key elements of fascism would you need to see evidence of in order to say that this is an accurate claim?

In my opinion, fascist tendencies will always be present in some parts of the world. I think that sometimes there is a need to implement authoritarian measures especially in times of chaos. Contemporary trends that demonstrate fascist tendencies, in my opinion, include North Korea's fascist- Stalinism approach of the government. Researchers note that North Korea is known as a holdover of 1930s-style Japanese Fascism. The provocative military control in North Korea has demonstrated this authoritarian style governance. I think a key characteristic of fascist countries is having a strong sense of "nationalism" and implementing totalitarian ways of governing in order to maintain that status.

This marks the end of this blog post! I hope you learned a little something from it. Comment down below your key-learnings! Until the next blog!
